Road Closures, Parking Lot Closures and Lane Reductions
Several exciting building and renovation projects are occurring on our
campus. Project teams are coordinating their construction plans in order
to expedite each project while keeping the safety of faculty, staff, students,
construction workers and the public a top priority.
Many of these projects impact the nearby streets, roadways and parking
areas. This page is intended to inform employees, students and visitors
about changes in vehicle and pedestrian traffic patterns near the construction
areas. For questions about a specific project, please view the project
site or call our U-M Construction Project Information line at 734/615-8440.

Maynard Street resurfacing project – partial closures / open to local traffic scheduled to begin July 21
As part of the Annual Street Resurfacing Project, the City of Ann Arbor will be repairing or replacing storm sewer, replacing miscellaneous concrete curbs, and removing and replacing the asphalt pavement on Maynard Street from East Liberty Street to East Jefferson Street.
The construction is anticipated to begin July 21 and last approximately 5 to 6 weeks. Local access for vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be maintained during the majority of the project; however, the City will occasionally need to close down one or both lanes of traffic in order to complete the necessary work. In addition, partial closures will occur in the intersection of Maynard and East William streets in order to repair damaged storm sewer pipes. During these times, traffic will be detoured around the construction area.
Garbage/recycling collection, utility service, and mail delivery will be maintained throughout the project. During the construction activities, parking will not be permitted on Maynard Street. Due to concrete work that may be performed in front of driveways, access may be restricted to some driveways while the concrete cures (usually 3 days). Notice will be given to affected areas the day prior to the work being performed.

UM - Art Fair Impact
This year’s Ann Arbor Art Fairs will be held July 16-19 and will impact our campus streets. North University Avenue between South State Street and Fletcher Street will close for set-up on Monday (July 14) at 9 a.m. U-M permit holders will be able to access the Thayer Street parking structure via East Washington Street to South Thayer Street.
The remainder of the impacted streets will close Tuesday (July 15) morning for set-up. Art Fair hours will be Wednesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Ann Arbor Street Art Fair will surround Ingalls Mall. Ann Arbor’s South University Avenue Art Fair will extend along both South University Avenue and East University Avenue. The Guild Summer Art Fair will continue along South Main and South State streets, while the State Street Art Fair returns to the East Liberty Street area. For more details, visit the Art Fair map at http://www.artfair.org/files/artfairmap2008.pdf.
Parking and Transportation Services will provide the M-Art Line, a shuttle service from the Glazier Way/Huron Parkway parking lot (NC51). U-M permit holders will continue to have regular access to the lot. M-Art Line riders will pay $5 per vehicle to park. During weekday fair hours, the bus service will be provided by the regular Commuter route. However, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, when the summer Commuter route normally does not operate, the M-Art Line buses will provide 15-minute service around the northern portion of the Commuter route – from Glazier Way to the stops at East Washington/Fletcher streets and C.C. Little. Visit Parking and Transportation’s web link, http://pts.umich.edu , for details.
Several streets that run through or next to campus will be closed beginning Tuesday morning – (North University Avenue from South State Street to Fletcher Street will be closed Monday at 9 a.m.)
South State Street from East Washington Street to Monroe Street
North University Avenue from South State Street to Fletcher Street
South University Avenue from South State Street to Washtenaw Avenue
East University Avenue from South University Avenue to Willard Street

East Liberty Street from South Main Street to South State Street
Maynard Street from East Liberty Street to East Jefferson Street
South Thompson Street – half a block south from East Liberty Street
South Main Street from Huron Avenue to East William Street
The listing below outlines operational details that have been planned in order to continue services to the campus building occupants in the areas of the art fairs:
Parking structure/lot access – The Thayer Street parking structure will remain open to University permit holders via the Thayer Street entrances. Lot C10 (the small surface parking lot by West Hall) will not be available for normal parking. This year, Lot W-18 (the surface parking lot south of the Thompson Street parking structure) will remain open as usual, with Blue parking along the back two rows and visitor parking in the front along Thompson Street. During the Art Fair days, all University parking structures will remain gated to only allow vehicles with appropriate University permits to enter. After 3:30 p.m. weekdays and all day Saturday, special event parking permits also will be sold at the structures where adequate vacancies occur.
Vendor deliveries to the Chemistry Building – The Chemistry Building dock will remain open, as will the intersection of Fletcher Street and North University Avenue.
Transit bus routes – U-M transit bus schedules will follow traditional “art fair” routes, which include relocating the Museum of Art/State Street stop west to Division and the South University stops to Hill Street. Alternate route maps can be viewed at http://pts.umich.edu.
Questions or comments about service issues should be directed to the appropriate department. General questions about issues pertaining to the art fairs can be directed to Jim Kosteva at 763-5554 or jkosteva@umich.edu.
